Comprehensive guide: how to choose the right materials for sauna ceilings
The sauna is the heart of the Finnish home, a place to relax...
Read moreIn many homes, the sauna is used several times a week, so the materials used in bathrooms are under a lot of stress. Sauna ceilings, panels and glass surfaces should be cleaned regularly to prevent dirt from building up. In addition to cleaning, the use of a range of care products will protect the surfaces and keep the materials looking beautiful and lasting for a long time. For us at Sun Sauna, it is important that a well-constructed sauna lasts for a long time, which is why we offer high-quality care products in addition to care instructions.
Wood dries faster at temperatures above 70 degrees Celsius, which causes all wood materials used in saunas to crack, grey and splinter over time. Constant humidity fluctuations, wetting and drying contribute to wood deterioration.
Unnecessary watering of wooden surfaces should be avoided except when washing, and drying the sauna after use will prevent the growth of fungi and mould. The correct way to dry the sauna is to keep the heater on for about half an hour after sauna use. Rapid ventilation and good air circulation will help drying, but the heat from the heater will dry out the sauna. It is a good idea to use tablecloths on the boards to create a different atmosphere, not only for ease of use and to prevent dirt accumulation, but also to create a different atmosphere in the sauna, for example by using different coloured tablecloths depending on the season.
The basic care of the boards is to dry them quickly and use a board protector. The Sun Sauna Table Care Kit contains two bottles of Sun Sauna Table Protector, Sun Sauna Table Cleaner and a handled sponge.
Sauna rooms sweat a lot, which is why regular cleaning is important. It is a good idea to clean the sauna floor every week or month when you clean the sauna, removing any loose dirt from the boards. A thorough cleaning of the sauna should be carried out at least every 1-2 years, and the sauna should be treated with a tile cleaner at the same time. The sauna floor is washed all over with a mild detergent solution in warm water. A soft sponge is used to brush the tiles in the direction of the wood, thus preventing damage to the surface of the tiles.
Sun Sauna’s wooden decking protector is made of paraffin oil. It prevents the boards from becoming dirty and reduces the absorption of moisture into the wood. It is not recommended to use any plant-based oils instead of the wood protector, as they can accelerate the growth of moulds when they biodegrade. A paraffin oil-based conditioner is absorbed into the wood’s roots and allows the wood to breathe.
The stain should only ever be applied to a completely dry floor. This should be ensured by keeping the stove on for about an hour after washing before applying the paraffin oil. The cooking oil should be applied to all areas of the seat and foot baths. The oil will deepen the wood’s own colour, so it is best to test the effect on an invisible area first, e.g. underneath the lauderall. This treatment can be used to restore the original colour of the mortar to almost its original colour. The sauna is ready for use immediately after treatment.
The most effective way to keep your glasses clean is to dry them with a rubber spatula or soft cloth. Limescale in the washing water will stick to the glass doors and walls of the sauna if the glass is not rinsed and dried with a spatula after the sauna. The surface of the glass has small pores that can collect dirt and soap residues over time. If the limescale has already built up badly on the glass, it can be removed with abrasive clay preparations.
The glass wall and door care kit contains a jar of clay product and a sponge, as well as instructions for glass care. The abrasive ingredients in the clay preparation do not scratch the glass, but gently break down the deposits. It is also ideal for cleaning tile and steel surfaces.
Take good care of your sauna – you’ll keep your sauna surfaces looking beautiful.
