Architect’s thoughts on sauna design, Jukka Haataja

A ceiling-high glass wall between the sauna and the washroom gives continuity to the space. The eye responds to the extremes without paying attention to the secondary space breakers – in this case the glass wall. The space can be extended with lighting and windows provide more space. The eye rests when looking “into the distance”.

The sheltered cold room is an additional room. It needs comfortable furniture and a fireplace. From the hottest times we have gathered to spend time together around the fire.

The unity of the changing and lounge areas is emphasised by a floor-to-ceiling glass wall and matching finishes.

Separating the shower stalls with sufficiently high masonry or glass-brick partitions creates intimacy in the washroom, and levels that serve as benches and refreshment areas add to the comfort.

The unity of the dressing and washroom areas is emphasised by a partition wall overlay and a uniform ceiling finish.
