Sauna – the centrepiece of your summer cottage

Sauna – the centrepiece of your summer cottage

The cottage season often starts as soon as the snow has melted and you can spend time in the peace and quiet of your own cottage until well into autumn. The sauna is the place where the mind of the cottage dweller at the latest relaxes, when the warmth of the sauna is used to wash away the dust of the city.

When designing a cottage sauna, it’s a good idea to consider sufficient space for the sauna and washing facilities. Even though the conditions in a cottage are usually more modest than in a home, it is not worth compromising too much on space. A small sauna usually fails to fulfil its refreshing and relaxing purpose and can result in an oppressively small sweatbox. An adequately sized sauna is one that can accommodate the whole family in one sitting. A sauna in a relaxing cottage sauna also has room for lounging.

Invest in durable decking

If the sauna building is already finished or the size of the sauna to be built is known, the best way to design a sauna is to use Sun Sauna’s sauna design software. The web-based design tool allows you to try out different floor plans, compare the suitability of different materials for tiles and panels, and design the lighting. Some sauna designs are better suited to cottage saunas than others. An example of this is the hard-wearing Dura slab.

Definitely the most popular laude for summer cottages is the hard-wearing Dura. Developed from the laude construction of public saunas, the Dura has a self-supporting frame and the boards are dowelled to the frame without the need for under-side ties. Dura’s design extends the life of the tile and facilitates cleaning. The laude is made entirely of heat-treated pine.

Remember the heating of the washing water

If necessary, the design of the sauna must also take into account the heating of the washing water if lake water is used for bathing. Many stoves for cottage saunas have an integrated water tank for heating the washing water. There are also water heating tanks on the market that can be installed in the chimney above the stove.

For more plentiful hot water, there are separate wood-fired water heaters of many sizes. The standard Sun Sauna water heating solution is implemented as an 80-100 litre metal tank above the stove. In addition to heating the water, the tank effectively prevents the smoke sauna from burning.

The most traditional of traditional smoke saunas

For many Finns, the soft and aromatic steam of a traditional smoke sauna with fresh sauna smoke is the only way to enjoy a sauna in a cottage environment. The popularity of smoke saunas has risen in recent years, and more and more cottage plots are now home to a log sauna with the atmosphere of yesteryear.

Sun Sauna has brought the smoke sauna into the 21st century with respect for tradition. We use the solutions of the well-known smoke sauna developer, Matti Ahonen, in our smoke saunas, and for example, the heater in our smoke sauna is designed by him. As with Sun Sauna’s other sauna solutions, the smoke sauna’s ceiling tiles are of course removable for cleaning. Handmade from strong aspen planks, the laude is handcrafted in the traditional way, as is the ceiling cladding, which is made of aspen planks without any supports. Our standard smoke sauna is equipped with a soapstone heater, a stainless steel water heating tank and the necessary firewalls.

The standard sauna is the easiest solution for the sauna enthusiast, as it is delivered ready to use and assembled directly to the customer’s site. To top it all off, a standard smoke sauna comes with ready-to-use building permit forms.

Sun Sauna also supplies smoke saunas as frames, which include a door, window, heater and water tank, as well as custom-made decks. The material of the log frame is either aspen or spruce. The smoke sauna ceilings are made of aspen wood, which will grey beautifully over time. We have aspen logs available in different qualities and widths.
